Σε αυτήν την κούρσα πρωταγωνιστής δεν ήταν ο νικητής αλλά ο κόσμος! Περίπου 10 λεπτά καθυστέρησε να δοθεί η εκκίνηση στον τελικό των 200μ αφού το κοινό που κατακλύσει το ΟΑΚΑ δια βοής αποδοκίμαζε όσα οδήγησαν στην απουσία του Κεντέρη από την κούρσα!
Ο κόσμος φώναζε, οι αθλητές ζητούσαν ησυχία για να συγκεντρωθούν, οι φίλαθλοι χειροκρότησαν μόνο τον Φρέντερικς αλλά δεν εισάκουσαν την παράκλησή του για ησυχία, και όλα αυτά είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα να γίνει μια άκυρη εκκίνηση.
Όταν τελικώς έγινε ο τελικός, «χρυσός» Ολυμπιονίκης ανεδείχθη ο Σον Κρόφορντ από τις ΗΠΑ, με επίδοση 19 δευτερόλεπτα και 79 εκατοστά. Ακολούθησαν οι συμπατριώτες του Μπέρναρντ Ουίλιαμς με 20.01 και Τζάστιν Γκάτλιν με 20.03.
Η ιδέα της αμερικανικής τριάδας στο βάθρο δεν άρεσε ιδιαίτερα στο κοινό που δεν αποθέωσε τους νικητές. Προτίμησε να φωνάζει ρυθμικά το όνομα του Κώστα Κεντέρη, του μεγάλου απόντα από τον τελικό αλλά και «Ελλάς, Ελλάς».
Ο Φελίξ Σάντσεζ άντεξε, ο Τζέιμς Κάρτερ όχι
Μετά τον τίτλο του Παγκόσμιου Πρωταθλητή, ο Φελίξ Σάντσεζ κατέκτησε και αυτόν του «χρυσού» Ολυμπιονίκη στα 400μ. εμπόδια, με μια συγκλονιστική προσπάθεια στην τελική ευθεία.
Η «μάχη» δόθηκε με τον Αμερικανό Τζέιμς Κάρτερ, ο οποίος έφυγε δυνατά από την αρχή και ήταν πρώτος μέχρι τα 300μ. Όμως μπαίνοντας στην τελική ευθεία, δεν είχε πια άλλες δυνάμεις και στα τελευταία μέτρα «κλάταρε», με αποτέλεσμα να χάσει, όχι μόνο την πρώτη θέση, αλλά και να μείνει εκτός βάθρου.
Ο Σάντεζ, που είχε κρατήσει δυνάμεις για το τέλος, τερμάτισε πρώτος με χρόνο 47.63. Δεύτερος ήταν ο Τζαμαϊκανός Ντάνι ΜακΦάρλαν με 48.11 και τρίτος ο Γάλλος Ναμάν Κεϊτά με 48.26. Ο Κάρτερ έμεινε τέταρτος με 48.58.
Φίλιπς, Μόφιτ, το αμερικανικό δίδυμο του μήκους
Το φαβορί επικράτησε στον τελικό του μήκος αντρών. Ο Αμερικανός Ντουάιτ Φίλιπς πήδησε στην πρώτη του προσπάθεια 8.59μ. και «καθάρισε» αμέσως το χρυσό μετάλλιο.
Μάταια προσπαθούσαν οι υπόλοιποι να πετύχουν ένα ανάλογο άλμα ή να εκμεταλλευθούν το γεγονός ότι στη συνέχεια είχε δύο άκυρες προσπάθειες και το ότι δεν πήδησε καθόλου στην τέταρτη και πέμπτη προσπάθεια.
Κι αν υπήρξε κάποιος, που έφτασε λίγο πιο κοντά από τους υπόλοιπους, ήταν ο άλλος Αμερικανός, Τζον Μόφιτ, που με 8.47μ. στην πέμπτη του προσπάθεια, πήρε το ασημένιο μετάλλιο κι έτσι το αγώνισμα αυτό κατέληξε αμερικανική υπόθεση.
Το χάλκινο μετάλλιο κατέκτησε ο Ισπανός Χοάν Λίνο Μαρτίνεθ με 8.32μ., αφήνοντας στην 4η θέση για ένα μόλις εκατοστό, τον Τζαμαϊκανό Τζέιμς Μπέκφορντ (8.31μ.).
Ο «χρυσός» Ολυμπιονίκης του Σίδνεϊ Ιβάν Πεντρόσο, μπορεί να ξεπέρασε για εφέτος τον εαυτό του, με τα 8.23μ., που πήδησε, όμως δεν ήταν δυνατόν να του δώσει αυτό το άλμα κάτι παραπάνω από την 7η θέση. Πάντως ο κόσμος τον καταχειροκρότησε στο τέλος, για όλα αυτά που έχει προσφέρει τα προηγούμενα χρόνια.

I missed that since it came on late, but clarify something for me were they booing because American athletes competed? Or because Kenteri didn't race? because it's not the Athletes fault Kenteri didn't race. It was his own doing.
All the 3 winner medalists appeared on the Today show and they sure didn't view the crowd as "winners" but more like a show one of the runners said he found it hilarious like a night at the Apollo, Sean the gold medalist said felt the crowd was experiencing a sense of disappointment and disgrace one of their one hometown athletes didn't get to compete at the birthplace of the Olympics because of the dope scandal.

ATHENS, Greece – Athletes and journalists were told to expect anti-American sentiment when we came to Athens.
We were told to consider not wearing U.S.A. gear out in public. Athletes have repeatedly been asked about the treatment they expected to receive, and how it has been since they arrived.
It hasn't been so bad at most of the places I've been over the last two-plus weeks.
Until Thursday night.
The crowd at the Olympic Stadium did its best to ruin the last event of the evening, the men's 200-meters.
When the fans couldn't do that, they settled for delaying it as long as they could.
Even the Greece-U.S. men's basketball game, for all its raucousness, was nothing like this.
Those fans there were loud and rowdy, but in a way that came across as rooting for someone to win, rather then jeering for someone to lose.
This bordered on hatred.
Greeks had been looking forward to the 200-meters for years.
Their hero, Kostas Kenteris, won the gold medal four years ago in Sydney, and the hope was that tonight would be his chance to repeat.
But Kenteris never made it to these Games.
He never showed up for a drug test on the day before the opening ceremony, was hospitalized after saying he and another Greek sprinter were involved in a motorcycle accident hours later, then withdrew from the Olympics.
Knowing they weren't going to see Kenteris, it seemed fans were trying to do the next best thing: Not let the race start.
"I understand the Greeks, that they wanted to see their favorite in the race," bronze medalist Justin Gatlin said. "But the race might have been more spectacular without the delay."
An American was probably going to win the race, and it seemed the Greeks didn't want to see it. They booed, yelled and whistled so loudly for so long that the race couldn't get going.
The runners tried to get in their starting blocks, but it was pointless because there was no way to hear the starter's gun.
One runner gestured with his hands asking the crowd to quiet down, but that was useless as well.
Most confusing to me, were the people running the scoreboard. They were either clueless or instigators.
During the delay, they kept showing Shawn Crawford on the big screen, ensuring that the booing would continue.
Crawford's somewhat cocky mannerisms have rubbed many the wrong way, and the fans had no trouble making him the villain.
Once the race did start, the fans saw the one thing they tried hardest to prevent – an American sweep. Crawford won, Bernard Williams was second and 100 champion Gatlin came in third.
There was applause after the race, but far from the type normally given an Olympic champion. It almost felt obligatory.
Watching reactions of the crowds has been one of the best parts of these Olympics. The small crowds during the first week were well documented, but there was usually a spirited atmosphere even at the lesser-attended events.
The spirit figures to stay, though you have to wonder if the hatred may be back Saturday night.
That's when Gatlin and Crawford should be back on the track for the 400 relay.
