The pregnant Lady at the opening ceremonies
      #16152 - Sat Aug 21 2004 11:51 AM

Remember at the Olympic opening ceremonies the pregnant lady at the end of the show? Her tummy was glowing, I have been receiving a lot of questions from non-Greek friends about that and what it sympolizes?-i have my own thoughts what it meant , but what do you all think it meant and has the producer/goreographer/creator ever say?

I really thought it was beautiful and represented life and the future.

Dear Anongirl,

we must not see the pregnant lady as a picture only. It was a part of the whole scenes and if we see carefully the show then the message is great and it's clear.

I am not an expert on arts, but I just have a common sense and I am Greek, born and living in Greece.
To my opinion (and I heard it later and from the chief artist manager of the ceremony) the show was saying that "Love, Eros is the moving power of history and life". The show was a hymn to LOVE.

- Remember when all the Greek history, form thousands years BC untill recent days, was passing.... EROS the God of LOVE was flying over everything.... The artist wanted to say that Eros, Love, Passion moves the history... and this nation (Greeks) has this history because it's an erotic, a passionate nation.

- Remember the show with the big Greek white statue. This statue is a real small size statue in our museums. It was found in Kiklades islands and belongs to the GEOMETRIC period of our history, 1000 years BC and before, I think. Remember, that lasers were making geometric shapes on this big white statue, meaning the Geometric period it belongs to. When the big statue was breaking in smaller parts, new statues of newer historical periods were presented. The smaller parts and statues were flying over the sea... and finally they moved lower.... and touched the water... staying there. At this moment you could see many WHITE stones-shapes on the water... they were symbolising OUR ISLANDS, and EROS the God of LOVE was flying over them. Then, remember the couple of lovers playing on the beach (very typical Greek summer picture), teasing each other with the sea water, kissing each other.... Eros was there flying over them... and after this the lights on the lovers get darker... Eros moves in a different direction, moves lower where a girl was and touches her.... after that the girl is PREGNANT.... starts walking... and her baby start glowing... IT WAS THE NEW LIFE THAT EROS BROUGHT.... the moments the baby was glowing.... lasers were making a huge DNA, the biological base of LIFE, that ALL WE are made of (a message that all we are the same, we are equal, we are made of the same thing)...

Usually in these Olympic opening ceremonies, other countries use some hundrends of people moving and making various shapes, words etc... To my opinion this shows luck of fantasy, and it's also FASISTIC because they use the HUMAN BEING as a point (a pixel) of the total picture. In our ceremony, this rubish tecknik was NOWHERE used. On the contrary we tried to RISE the Human Being. Every human being in our show had FACE, was not a "point".

I was amazed watching this show. It had high level art, It had tenderness, it had love and erotism, it had messages to the world that we are equal, we are the same, it had a respect to life and to the human being, it was an anti-war, a humanist show. It was showing THE GREEK SOUL to the world.

I think in a more general view, it was a EUROPEAN art. It was art that has NOTHING to do with .... Hollywood level bullshit art, and maybe the American people could not understand a lot.....
After the ceremony, Greek reporters asked US athlets what was their opinion about the ceremony. They answered: "Oh yes, the ...FIREWORKS were great."

Dear Anon,
thank you so much for the
in detail explanation,
now I will be more well informed
when I'm asked about the lady
and her glowing tummy
I love art myself and loved
the entire opening ceremony,
besides the Love/Eros theme I also liked
the water theme and how Ancient history
connected with modern, it was breathtaking
to watch, the creator did a wonderful job and
he sure inspired me and what I do.

Wish you narrated the ceremonies for
NBC, I'm sure American viewers who
were not familiar with Greece or our history
would
understand much better and what everything meant,
I'm afraid our 2 hosts here in the states didn't do
a good job, to give you
an example when the couple/lovers were
kissing at the beach/water one of our hosts
Katie Couric described it as lust, she made it sound..
cheap even though that wasn't her intention i don't
think she got it either.
We had so many commercial breaks during the opening
ceremony that it would be hard for some people
to follow or pick up from where the story
left off-but still it was amazing to watch.

In closing I would like to say
please don't be so hard toward our American
friends,as a Greek-American
i can ensure you
in addition to those who didn't understand
there were many who did and loved it
and are pupils and fans
of Greek mythology and art, I had an online
friend email me after the ceremonies were over
and told me how much she loved the show-and our history.
As for the Athletes comments,
I don't know how many
of them actually had the chance
to watch the opening ceremonies since they
entered the stadium after they were over,
and witnessed only
the fireworks and Bjork,
but I could see on TV how touched and
moved many athletes were and honored
to be there.
Well if i can say myself the firewroks were
cool too
