Panos Karnezis
supported by The Consulate General of Greece in Toronto
Panos Karnezis (Greece) "made a literary splash last year with Little Infamies, a collection of absorbing short stories set in a contemporary Greek village" (Washington Post). The worthy follow-up is The Maze, Karnezis' intelligent and lyrical first novel which takes place in 1922, after the Greek army's three-year "expedition" into Asia Minor abruptly ends when the military tide turned in the Turks' favour. After a massive offensive that quickly turned into defeat, the Greek Army was forced to retreat to the coast in disorder and evacuate Asia Minor. The New York Times Book Review calls Panos Karnezis' writing as fresh, lyrical and natural.
Panos Karnezis was born in Greece in 1967. He moved to England in 1992 to study engineering, and was later awarded an M.A. in creative writing by the University of East Anglia. He now lives in north London.
