An Italian in Athens

Astoria, December 17, 2004. The Theater Group of the Greek Cultural Center presents a play by N. Tsiforo P. Vasiliadis ;An Italian in Athens This side-splitting comedy, presented in three acts, examines Greek Society confronting the issues of “virtuosity and malice living the high life and its obsession for everything foreign. The original production of this play broke box office records in Greece during the 1960s.
Toula is abandoned by her first husband, who leaves her for a younger Greek woman. Yet, the affair doesn;t bloom because he dies prematurely. Meanwhile Toula inherits twenty million. Because of her dead husband's affair Toula distrusts all Greek women. Enter Tony, her younger brother who is studying in Italy. He has just married a Greek woman and dreams of opening a workshop with his sister's inheritance. Now, the masquerade begins. Tony's wife transforms herself into an Italian. She enters the Athenian world of Toula who now lives with her naïve second husband and her mother. The mission of Tony and his Italian wife is to convince Toula that a Greek woman is worth more than any other.
The production is directed by Martha Tompoulidou. Born in Thessalonica, she has studied Greek Literature at the Aristotle University and theater in the Athens School of Drama. She has appeared internationally with the National Greek Theater. She has been living and working in New York since 2001, where she came with a Fulbright Scholarship.
The cast in alphabetical order is: Yanni Amouris, Larisa Antipa, Mary Varvatakou, Costa Deligiannis, John Kallianiotis, Angelo Niakas, Adia Olympia, Diodoros Pagoudis, Anastasis Samaras, Elsa Tsartsidou, Alexia Charalambidou.
The performances take place in the theater of the Greek Cultural Center, 27-18 Hoyt Avenue South, Astoria, New York on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 8:00pm from January 14 thru February 13, 2005. The ticket price is $15.00 per person.
