Gods, Myths and Mortals: Discover Ancient Greece will take you on a journey through the world of ancient Greece. Your initial tour guides will be the great gods Zeus, Poseidon and Athena as they reminisce about their powers and responsibilities. Learn how gods and mortals interacted and take an on-screen personality quiz to determine which mythological character you are most like.
Visit the gymnasium (school) and oikos (home) to discover which skills were most valued in ancient Greek boys and girls. Explore the importance of athletic competition as you arm wrestle ancient Greek counterparts using mechanical arms or test your leg strength as you learn about ancient jumpers. Become familiar with the ancient Greek alphabet by translating messages from Greek to English. Learn about the heroism of ancient Greek women in myth and daily life and compete with the goddess Athena in a virtual weaving contest. Create a textile on a fixed loom and explore the steps of textile production from sheep shearing to weaving as you turn a “spindle” to see a video.
Climb inside a 12 foot tall Trojan Horse before stepping into Homer’s great epic poem, The Odyssey, where you will journey through rocky caves and over open seas, escape the crawl-through Cyclops Cave and sing like a Siren in the Sirens Karaoke Cove. Be prepared to face on-screen dilemmas … your choices will be tracked along the way and your personalized on-screen Hero Record can be emailed home.
Budding archaeologists can visit the Temple of Zeus at Olympia and assist in the reconstruction of a 3-D temple, learn about column construction, sculptures, and the giant statue of Zeus (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World). Explore actual examples of ancient Greek artifacts: painted pottery, coins, votives, drinking cups, loom weights, arrowheads and sling bullets.
Visit CMOM and learn about ancient Greece and its impact on the modern world… in the words we use every day; in scientific thought and technology; in literature and entertainment; in democratic decision-making; and even in the ways we design, decorate and construct our environment.

In spring 2004, the CMOM team had a discussion about the ancient Greeks and how their epics, art, architecture and philosophy left a legacy of creativity, wisdom, and insight into the human condition that has shaped western civilization for 2,500 years. (No, really, this IS the kind of thing we sit around discussing!) Thus, the seed for Gods, Myths and Mortals: Discover Ancient Greece was planted. With the blessing of the Museum's Board of Directors, the Museum applied for three planning grants, from the NEH, the Niarchos Foundation and the Jaharis Foundation, all of who believed in the importance of the project and the Museum's ability to create a meaningful and unusual learning experience.
For three years, CMOM’s in-house exhibition, education and development teams have been hard at work (and play!) with scholars, designers, fabricators, artists, focus groups, television producers, and the Greek community to create this $2 million nationally traveling high-tech interactive Greek experience that we are so proud to now introduce to you and your family. Over a five year period, the 4,000 sq. ft. exhibition will be shown in at least six major American cities and reach four million visitors. However, our fundraising efforts are not over. We are presently, working towards meeting a $250,000 challenge gift from the Jaharis Family Foundation to help reach our funding goal.
The exhibition utilizes innovative technology formats, original artifacts on loan from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and cast replicas and coins donated from the Hellenic Ministry of Culture/Archaeological Receipts Fund. We have been working with the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project (Greece, UK, US) to present the latest model of the "worlds first computer" - the Antikythera Mechanism based on the Project team's latest findings. The exhibition is also accompanied by a full array of educational and public programs and performances.
We deeply appreciate the generosity and guidance of many people in the Greek-American community, in Greece, and the vision of Mayor Bloomberg and Borough President Stringer for their support. One of the wonderful aspects of this project is the new friends we have developed. Our deepest gratitude is extended to our supporters and in-kind partners of Gods, Myths and Mortals: Discover Ancient Greece.
