Update: New7Wonders World Tour Visits the Hagia Sophia Zurich/Switzerland, September 13, 2006 Continuing its spectacular, worldwide call to action, the New7Wonders World Tour's giant hot-air balloon flew above the Hagia Sophia at dawn as the second of the 21 finalist monuments in the global campaign to choose the New 7 Wonders of the World. On July 7, 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal, the winning monuments will be announced during the gala Official Declaration of the New 7 Wonders of the World, broadcast live across the planet. The event will highlight the rich cultures represented by the finalists. The World Tour launched at the Acropolis in Athens in a tribute to the ancient Greek origin of the Wonders of the World concept. During the afternoon ceremony at the Hagia Sophia, a symbol of faith and respect with a remarkable history, New7Wonders founder Bernard Weber presented the official candidate certificate to Prof. Haluk Dursun, President of the Hagia Sophia Museum, and Prof. Ortayli Ilber, President of Topkapi Palace. One of the world's best-known symbols of civilization and culture Bernard Weber urges people in Turkey to vote: "One of the greatest symbols of Turkey [thanx to Greece - let's not forget...credit where credit is due, hey ?], the Hagia Sophia needs your support to have the chance at becoming one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Vote now and spread the word!" The World Tour will remain in Europe and Asia for 2006, proceeding to Africa, the Middle East and the Americas in 2007. This is the biggest global vote ever to have taken place. Millions of people have already voted for their favorite "wonder." Numerous milestones have already been reached on a journey across the Internet, television and the world's media. This journey will reach its pinnacle on July 7, 2007 - 07.07.07, when the world will discover which monuments have been named as the New 7 Wonders of the World. On January 1, 2006, the New7Wonder Panel of Experts, chaired by the former head of UNESCO, Prof. Dr. Federico Mayor, short-listed those nominations with the most votes received by the end of 2005. The top 77 choices have been narrowed down to just 21 finalists, which are the focus for the final year of voting. On 07.07.07, the world will learn which of the Earth's treasures will stand in history alongside the Ancient 7 Wonders of the World. Half of all net revenues raised by the New7Wonders campaign will be put towards restoration efforts worldwide. To Vote and to view the finalist list, visit www.new7wonders.com. Vote!
