The "151 Virus" Hits Greece

Athens - The 'mutiny' by Drama prefecture MP Stavros Dailakis on September 29th, his expulsion by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and the journalist strike on the following day made rumors fly regarding possible developments within the next days. These included the possibility of a snap election as New Democracy faces a predicament of 151 MPs, a reshuffle but also a domino effect by other party MPs. These rumors - which were fed by media silence - led to a council of ministers emergency meeting on October 2nd and a dramatic statement by Education Minister Evripidis Stylianidis "Karamanlis or chaos" on Greece's Skai radio.

It should be noted that Mr. Stylianidis is a former deputy minister of foreign affairs but was also Mr. Karamanlis' best man at his wedding. Rumor also has it that he could be next in line at the head of the party in the event of Mr. Karamanlis' resignation. But according to different rumors, Mr. Karamanlis will not opt for early elections or a reshuffle. Instead, he will attempt to court popularity through an announcement of new measures and a visit to Qatar aimed at resolving the thorny Olympic airways issue. But there is no doubt that the dominant theme is and will be Mr. Karamanlis' precarious majority of 151 in parliament.
