Greek Coast Guard mobilizes to help Russian ship in distress

ATHENS, Greece The Greek Coast Guard has mobilized a rescue
mission for a Russian Navy ship that is adrift in stormy seas off the shore of
the island of Ikaria in the northeast Aegean Sea, Greek officials said.

The Russian vessel sounded a distress signal around midday Monday because
of an unspecified mechanical problem, a Greek Coast Guard official said.
A Greek frigate and a cargo ship were nearby and may evacuate the 88
Russian crew members from the ship, the official said.

It was unclear if the ship, which was about 13 miles off the coast of
Ikaria, was listing or in danger of sinking.
