What is all this talk about Europeans? What the hell is a 'European'?
      #1447 - Tue May 22 2001 10:19 PM

I cannot stand it anymore! I have to post about this! I am fed up to the teeth of this nonsense label called 'European'.

Like a French person is like an English person? Like a Spaniard is like an Irish person?!

This term is used to describe some from the continent of Europe, it is NOT meant to describe the person!

There is NO such thing as being typically European. The Spanish have their own language, laws and customs, as so the Swedes, Germans, Latvians, Dutch, Danish and Welsh.

They have as much in common with each other as they do with Americans. Ie, nothing!

People in certain countries like the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany do cross into each others countries a lot but this is not neccessarily a common practice.

I was in the Netherlands recently and they were facsinated to hear about my country, Ireland, as none had ever been there. But Americans seem to think we all pop in and out of each others countries and speak the dozens of languages needed to do this!

This ain't so.

I have been on the west coast of America and the east coast and all over the midwest and you all have the same primary language, the same television shows, same foods, same stores, same cars, same laws (give or take), same everything. Ok, in NY it's a soda, in the Ohio it's pop, so what! It's all the same here!

Europe is not this way. I am not European, I am Irish! Describing someone as European is like describing Fido as a 'canine' at a dog show.

But what KIND of canine, they would ask! Like a poodle is the same as a Rottweiler?

What to hell is American?
Could be you are Canadian, or Cuban, or Haitian, or Nicaraguan, or Perubian but you are still American.
America is not a Nation but a Continet
same as Europe is a Continet.
You can be a USA citizen of the American Continet, as well as Brazilian and speak Portuguese, or Spanish, or Mayan Indian, also English, or French.
In other words America means a continet of two parts North and South.

I'm afraid you are missing the point my friend!

A European is a person belonging to one of the cultures that are found in the European continent.

We may all have different characteristics and varied ways of thinking, but we all have to common elements that make us part of the same family. Our European culture is based on 1)the greco-roman culture and 2)christianism.

Everything, from our way of seeing life, our democracy, our customs, our institutions, and the fundamental belief of respecting Human rights (against death sentence for ex.), all that is so, because of the existence of a common cultural basis which we share with no others (not even worth it to compare us with Americans!)

You are Irish you say! That is great! But you also belong, just by being Irish, to the broader family of the Europeans!
Be proud of it!

I agree with HM!
By the way, strange thing for an Irishman to say: Are you from Northern Ireland or Ireland, and is a person from Northern Ireland Irish or British? confused? you will be if you try to hang on to out-dated, isolationist (and possibly dangerous)ideas of nationalism.

lol This is a great question.
I have a problem defining a european. Sure it means belonging to the continent europe but why do people use it so broardly to describe their culture like their own country lacks something?
By the way isn't Ireland an Island and therefore not joined to the continent europe?
I thought europe was just the actual continent. I think they have confused the cultural or economic meaning of the word european with the geographical one.
What about Cyprus, Turkey etc, belonging to europe when geographically they are middle east?
Well I think people should be more specific when they throw the 'european' word around like that because it seems to have quite a few meanings.
cheers
