The beautiful little Greek girl, Foteini, was the darling of the closing ceremonies. My eyes had remained surprisingly dry up until that time when I saw Foteini staring up at the Olympic flame (Ok, so I did swipe a way a misty tear or two before then). But the moment I saw Foteini take the light and spread it around the stadium like our Easter candle at the Anastasi, my eyes turned into virtual fountains! When she blew out the candle and said “See you next time”, I broke down and cried like a baby.
And I heard the announcer say that she is a little orphan girl who is being looked after at the SOS Villages. Then I felt like a ton of bricks dropped on me. You mean to tell me that there is not one single Greek family who would not want this darling angel to grace their households? Is there not even one!!!?????
Foteini, I will be proud to call you mine, any day!

P.S. Since writing the above, I have read that SOS Children's Villages Greece further benefited from the Games thanks to Greece's national basketball team and silver medal-winning women's water polo team, which both donated money to the organisation for every goal they scored. Bravo to our Olympic Athletes - further proof that the Olympics brings out the best in us!

I didn't know that about the little girl being an Orphan :(:(:( I missed it when the announcer said it.
How sad,do you know how she lost her parents?I hope a nice Greek family will adopt her soon.
The little girl putting out the flame was the most touching moment of the Olympics.
and her name is so symbolic Fotini as in light-Fos.

thank you for your lovely photo that you posted of Foteini. My name is Foteini also, and I would love to adopt her. Here is the website for the SOS Villages if anyone cares to contribute: http://www.childrens-villages.org/

I think it's so beautiful you want to adopt Fotini, today she was interviewed on ANT TV and she is such a smart beautiful little girl, would you believe it that she was encouraging other Orphan children not to worry about things? It made me cry but she seems like a happy child and the S.O.S people are taking very good care of her.
Just a though but if you want to adopt her you have to consider she has 5 brothers/sisters and probably wouldn't like being split up. Also a lot of Greek-Americans have expressed interest in adopting her but also complained how difficult it would be because of Greece's adoption laws which could take forever.

I know, she has 5 brothers and sisters and there lies the problem. No one wants to split up a family and the Greek laws have to be strict to ensure that the children are happy and I am sure that a concern is that they remail "Greek" and "Greek Orthodox". If I was a rich person, I would adopt these beautiful children in a heartbeat, if they let me. But unfortunately charities like SOS have to exist. It is unfortunate that we still have to have children living in orphanages, but I mean, in this day and age where people wait on waiting lists for years to adopt children, it just seemed incredibly strange to me that a beautiful child like her would be an orphan still - they don't even live in foster homes. I just felt sad, but I am sure she and her brothers and sisters are well taken care of. I guess the least I can do is send my donation.
