Deadline extended for WTC relief program
      #1828 - Tue Nov 20 2001 07:10 AM

NEW YORK (CNN ) -- People unemployed as a result of the World Trade Center attacks will have 30 more days to apply for a special unemployment program, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Monday.

The deadline for applying for the Disaster Employment Assistance program has been pushed back to December 16.

The program allows self-employed people, business owners and those not otherwise eligible for unemployment assistance to receive 26 weeks of benefits if they are out of work as a direct result of the September 11 attacks.

"As layoffs persist as a result of the World Trade Center attack, the need continues for disaster unemployment assistance," said Ted Monette, federal coordinating officer.

"People are still coming to terms with the economic effects of this tragedy, and we want to give them every opportunity to get the help they need."

The program is funded by FEMA and administered by the New York State Department of Labor.

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut residents can apply for the program by calling (888) 209-8124. Residents of other states should call (877) 358-5306.
