Kenteris ‘did not know’
      #16477 - Wed Sep 01 2004 08:30 AM

Sprinter blames ‘trusted’ coach for any doping infractions
After protesting repeatedly that he had never taken illegal performance-enhancing substances, Greece’s top sprinter, Costas Kenteris, appears to have told prosecutors that if he did use such substances he was the unwitting victim of his former coach.

“Christos Tzekos gave us tonics and vitamins. We had absolute confidence in him. If I took illegal substances I did not know it. I did not act out of guile, nor did I have bad intentions,” Kenteris reportedly said during his testimony on Monday, referring to himself and training partner Katerina Thanou.

Meanwhile, the government yesterday proposed an inter-party commission to investigate the issue. The Finance Ministry police (SDOE) began an inquiry into neighborhood gymnasiums, following parents’ complaints that their children were being plied with illegal substances.

Judicial sources yesterday leaked some of the testimony that Kenteris gave prosecutors Spyros Mouzakitis and Athina Theodoropoulou on Monday. Kenteris, winner of the 200-meter gold in Sydney, and Thanou (who won silver in the 100-meter dash), were forced to withdraw from the Olympics after missing an IOC doping test on August 12.

Kenteris reportedly stressed that the motorcycle crash in which he and Thanou claimed they were hurt that night did take place, despite serious doubts by police and judicial officials. The “crash” allowed the two sprinters to spend five days in a hospital, negating the possibility of a doping test. “Everyone must believe that the accident took place. We were going quite fast but it is was probably caused by a rough patch in the road — or water or oil,” Kenteris reportedly said. Asked why he and Thanou took a motorcycle to return to the Olympic Village when learning that IOC officials were looking for them, he replied, “I would have taken a helicopter to get there.” Kenteris reportedly blamed his coach, Christos Tzekos, with whom he has since severed ties, for not telling him and Thanou until 10.30 p.m. on August 12 that IOC testers were looking for them. That was when they saw on television the “unrealistic proportions” the story had taken, Kenteris said. Kenteris said that no officials at the Olympic Village had told him and Thanou earlier that they were being sought.

Track’s top international body, the IAAF, is investigating whether Kenteris and Thanou violated anti-doping rules by missing tests.

This is the most ridiculous story I have ever heard!

1. Why is the Prosecutor's Office even involved in this matter? This matter should be up to the agency that conducts the Tests (IOC) to investigate, and not for Greece to spend any more money on this issue. Let the IOC or the International Track-and-Field Federation investigate it. And then, once they issue their findings, if there is any evidence of any criminal wrong-doing, then the Prosecutor should get involved at that time and not before. Those are the rules and I do not find it right that the Prosecutor of Greece is jumping the gun here and being so quick to condemn! Let the IOC do the dirty work for them and not our own people! For shame!

2. You mean to tell me that no one actually suspected that Kenteris and/or Thanou could actually be taking any performance enhancement drug? I mean, come on here people, I knew the moment Kenteris won his Gold Medal in Sydney in 2000 that he must be on some kind of steroid. I mean, really, folks, are we actually that stupid? Please, do not insult my intelligence!!!

3. I wish these athletes would start acting like adults and not children.

4. I wish the IOC testers would not have "conveniently" chosen a test date of August 12th, the day before the opening ceremonies, to test our athletes. You mean to tell me that they could not have tested them for these games earlier? How convenient is this! I mean, really, folks, after Greece having spent the billions of euros to host the damn games, could they not have had the decency to test these guys beforehand and not put Greece through the agonizing scandal? Where is the responsibility lie there? I call upon the IOC to show some class.

5. I am disgusted why so much has been made of this matter in the first place. All they did is miss a test, not actually get caught. It's funny how everyone quickly runs to "tar and feather" these athletes. It's funny! One day we hail them as victors and the next day we slowly cook them over a fire. My advice to Fani Halkia - Watch out!

6. Who the heck is going to pay for this expensive fiasco in the first place!? Come on, people, this is sport - Games - Play!! It ain't life and death!

I don't want to believe Fani has anything
to do with this, maybe I'm naive but I still
like to believe there are athletes out there
and I'm referring to athletes around the world
that are clean just like our ancient Greek
athletes were.

Please don' tell me 14 year old gymnast take
any drugs. It will be really
scary if they did.

I'm glad Kenteri spoke out even though
he is not being honest.

From day 1 I knew his coach was
guilty I didn't like his face at all, he
looks like a liar and a sneak.

I honestly feel this scandal was so big
because the Olympics were held in Greece
and Kenteri happens to be Greek
and one of Greece's
sportstars, if the same
scandal were to happen
in Beijing with Kenteri it wouldn't
have the same interest, I think.

Δεν δικαιολογώ τη χρήση ουσιών αλλά δεν είναι Ελληνικό "προνόμιο", ξέρετε... Συμβαίνει και σε άλλες χώρες και ορισμένοι δημοσιογράφοι που έβγαζαν στον αέρα παράθυρα με τίτλους όπως: "Η Ολυμπιάδα της ντόπας" θα έπρεπε τουλάχιστον να ντρέπονται! Διοργανώσαμε φανταστικούς αγώνες, όλος ο κόσμος έλεγε "ΜΠΡΑΒΟ" και οι δημοσιογράφοι μας... το βιολί τους! Λες και όλοι οι αθλητές μας παίρνουν ουσίες! Κανείς όμως δεν είχε τα κότσια να κάνει έστω τη μισή φασαρία για την κυρία Jones η οποία ήταν φαβορί και όμως τα πήγε χάλια, έτσι;
