Cnn propoganda
      #1888 - Fri Nov 30 2001 04:15 PM

This is for all those in Greece and abroad who do not understand the U.S. people and its access to media.
Most citizens in the U.S. have sattelite systems who have access to over 150 channels.of those are american news agencies BUT.. also news from the BBC, Reuters, French television, Spanish news, German,Arabic, as well as all the news channels you have access in Greece. So let me ask you who is more equipped to filter out propoganda? The Greek-American public or the Greek public who is spoon fead the news from their government's news networks or from private business under the ospices of their government. We have a choice, do you? Wake up people of Greece they are feeding you propaganda that they are feeding us propaganda. What a joke. Examine your lives. Examine your knowledge, really free your minds. Truth be said.

A little less technology and a little more critical thinking would do us all some good.

Your response is misguided. Yes critical thinking is the essence, however this post is on the ways we gather information to come to critical thinking and decisions.Just in case people in Greece did not know. Since their main argument is we are all pions and slaves of CNN.

When I was a child, in Greece, my teachers taught me that every good book contained something bad, an idea that was wrong; and every bad book contained something good, an idea that was right.

So I grew up and learned to gather my information from all sources. (And then I went to college for Journalism. Go figure!)

THIS IS FOR TRUTH TO BE SAID!

I am GREEK AND PROUD OF IT. I lived in Canada and now in your country for the last 4 years.
My experience taught me one thing my friend. Never judge people or a country till you live in it.
My opinion about American people? Some there are smart and well-educated people that will not spoon-fed by the media but unfortunately these people are so few! The majority is ignorant about the world politics and the foreign policies of their own country.
You have misunderstood Greek people. Greek people are not that they do not like Americans they do not like the foreign policy of your country.
Greece and the Greek people had suffered because of the foreign policies of your country. Here are two very recent examples.
The military government that sat on the Greek people's neck for 7 1/2 years and your country was a huge supporter. Young and old people died then. Do you think people of Greece are going to forget so soon? The other one is the invasion of Turks in Cyprus and again your country was a supporter. People are still suffering because of that.
Guess what though! When your county was engaged on the Gulf war my country was helping your country by allowing the use of the air space of Greece. The Turks refuse at the beginning. Did you know this or is news for you?
What is wrong with you people (Americans)? Look at the present situation. Most of the terrorist that came to your country was living and most of them came from Germany. Now quit going after Greece every time something wrong is going on in your country. Are you people mad because a little country like Greece dared to put some restrictions of the use of our land by your mighty country? Don't you know that no matter how small we are, we are still proud country and we are not going to bow to anyone so they can use us and abuse us any which way they want?

Face it my friend. The majority of American population is ignorant about foreign politics no matter how many channels you are watching. By the way I am watching the same ones. Allow me my friend. One word only! GARBAGE! As Springsteen says in his song "52 channels and nothing on".
You said that there are more than on computers in some households. So what! You know how they use those darn computers. On chatting porno and how to build bombs.
Instead of looking and criticizing others why don't try to solve problems in your own country that there are many.
So are you trying to rub on Greek people’s faces that the Americans enjoy higher technology? So what! Let me tell you my friend something that you do not know.
Greeks still know how to enjoy LIFE. They do not sit in front of a stupid box for hours and hours to watch soap operas and those ridiculous talk shows. They go out and enjoy friendships and very hot political discussions. They enjoy interaction with the other humans face to face not through a box.

The Greeks are very much involved in politics at very young age compare to the American kids. The American children and I am talking junior high and high school kids do not even know that Canada is a different country. Some of them they do not even know that The Canadians speak English and French.
Why do not concentrate to teach your kids better. They are going to grow to adulthood and they are going to be as ignorant as you!

I am Greek also. Have been to Greece many times.

Have been utterly ashamed of the utter filth coming out of its mouth.

Have you lost your sense of worth Ellada?

Nixon did not support the Junta. Spiro Agnew was Greek. This are lies your theif Andreas Papandreou fed the masses. Can you tell me how many bathrooms are in his villa?

If Greece did not install a convicted felon in charge of Cyprus maybe Turkey wouldn't have invaded.

Shame on you Greece.

DO ELLADA A BIG FAVOUR! PLEASE DO NOT CALL YOUR SELF A GREEK!
I VERY MUCH DOUBT IT YOU WERE THERE THOSE YEARS AND IF YOU WERE YOU MUST HAVE BEEN ONE OF THOSE THAT RAISE THE GUNS AGAINST THE REST OF THE TRUE ELLINES THAT THEY WERE FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM!
MY COUNTRY IS ASHAMED OF NOTHING!
YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF?
READ THE FOLLOWING. YOU MIGHT START WONDERING AND TRY TO FIND OUT THE TRUTH! THAT IS IF YOU ARE NOT SPOON-FED AND NARROW MINDED!

· The United States bears a national responsibility for the Cyprus tragedy. Speaking publicly in Nicosia on November 11, 1997 Ambassador Richard Holbrooke described U.S. actions in 1974 as "shameful." At a Capitol Hill conference on Cyprus on June 10, 1998 Ambassador Tom Boyatt, the State Department's Cyprus desk officer in 1974, stated that "a Cyprus solution is possible if the U.S. steps up to its responsibilities and remembers its own guilt. So we have a redemption factor here."

Stella,

Do not so hastily judge someone, when you dont even know them. I am Hellenic-American, who as a young boy went to an Hellenic-American School, was very active in the Greek Orthodox church, and as travelled to Greece every summer. As an adult I have various business intrests in Greece and travel very frequently between the two countries. I do have a lively pulse on Greece past and present. Most important my wife is also Hellenic_American who was raised in Greece till she came to this country at the age of 16!!! Whatever I did not or do not understand about present Greek culture and Greek manorisms, my wife explains them to me.

As for ancient Greek culture, I have a Masters degree in classical civilization and literature. I guarantee you that I have more knowledge of Ancient Greek culture than 95% of the Greek population. That should answer any of your questions of how "Greek" I am.

As for American foreign policy, Greek people cannot even begin to understand the responsibilities of the U.S. on the world stage. But how could they? They are a very small nation (10 million or so) who's international policies have no consequence either way. Secondly most Greeks are ill-informed on the foreign policies of the U.S.
One must understand that decisions have to be made, and there will always be somoene happy with it, and others angry. It is a fact of life. You cannot please everyone. Do not be naive. As a nation the U.S. has to look out for their interests and the interests of their citizens first, and then the rest of the world.Do you really think if Greece was in the U.S. position they would act differently?

Your comments about the Greek-Junta shows you are misinformed. Before you comment read up on it, and read about how precarious Greece's position was at that time.

On Cyprus, I implore you to read an amazing book on the Cypriot conflict, written by a Cypriot. The book is called Cyprus and was written by Michael Attalides. It is one of the most unbiased accounts of the events in Cyprus that I have read. Yes the U.S. foreign policy could have been different, but you cannot blame the U.S. for the predicament of the Cypriots. You must go to the root cause of the conflict, and there you will find that the fault lies with the Cypriots I am sorry to say.

To your comments on living life. I do not know your interpretation of this, but life is not going to barakia and kafedaki, paralia, and siesta.
Americans, by percentage of population, travel domestically and abroad, more than any other nation. In fact per capita we have the most physically active individuals in the world. Greeks on the other hand have the dubious distinction of having the highest smoking rate in the world. An activity which is not conducive to physical activity, is it?

On the Greek youth being politically active, I hope so. I hope they learn from their politicians mistakes and do not repeat them.
but i am very weary of this. As for the American youth not being politically active, I believe those comments are highly misguided and untrue. My generation, X, was extremely involved in politics, and not just having opinions, but actions. And I am proud to say that the younger generation now seem to be much more informed and active than even my generation ever was. I am confident in Americas future politics and its leaders, are you in yours?

Ignorant is a strong word. Use it only when you truly know someone and the facts. More importantly, take a look at yourself first and substantiate your comments by fact and not by folk belief and heresay. Maybe then you can save yourself the embarassment.

Examine your knowledge

Free your mind
