For a couple of years I've been trying to remember the name of a very old film that I saw in Greece on television. I can't remember, and I'm hoping you can help. It may be that the film in question is a famous old film that everyone knows, and you'll immediately recognize it, or it could be some rare, unknown old thing that nobody's ever heard of.
I only remember snatches of the story and a few images. It was set in the Greece of the 19th century, I think. People had rifles, but I didn't see any evidence of 20th century technology. It all took place in a very rustic environment. The main character was a rigid, angry old man, head of a clan and "big man" of the neighborhood, very traditional, wearing foustanellaa and the whole bit. He had two or three children, one daughter and two sons. (Or maybe a daughter, a son, and a lieutenant.) The one son (or lieutenant) was like him, rigid and old fashioned and conservative. The old man was dictatorial and ruled the neighborhood with an iron fist. The daughter met a man from outside, and they fell in love. One of my relatively clear memories is of their meeting. The daughter is at a spring, filling water in a jug, and the outside guy happens on her there. Of course, the old man opposes their love, and the loving couple has to run away. There's more complexity to the plot, I think, but my memories are vague. I do remember fairly vividly the final scene. (Vividly, but not necessarily accurately.) The escaping couple are hiding in a windmill. The younger son of the family is on their side and sneaks into the windmill to try to help them. Somehow in the confusion, the son is at a window or trying to climb out a window and is seen by the father (or the father's lieutenant or elder son or whatever he is) and is shot and killed. The couple, I think, end up escaping, and the old man is left with his daughter gone and (at least) one of his sons dead at his own hand or at his command. Does this ring any bells? I have a vague, vague, vague memory that that the time I read the title in the newspaper or on the screen and looked it up in my dictionary and it was something like "the flute" or "the peasant's flute" or "pan-pipe" or something like that. (Remember, this is all a memory from about 4 years ago!)
