Devdas is a 2002 film which was based on Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel also entitled Devdas.. The film attracted overseas attention as well, receiving a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival. The story is of great love and tragedy - about two childhood sweethearts, named Devdas and Paro.

Devdas returns from London where he has studied law. Devdas' and Paro's families are neighbours and it would seem that there should be no barrier to their marriage. However, all is turned upside down when Devdas' sister-in-law maliciously reminds his mother that Paro's mother was a dancer before marriage, which leads to insults and a neighborly feud - ultimately separating the loving pair. And this is where the tragic love story begins.

It is reported to be one of the most elaborate stories in Bollywood history (Hindi version of Hollywood). No costs were spared for sets or costumes and it was said that the jewelry and saris weighed the actors down so much that they needed to reorder with clothing and accessories of less weight.
