300 Spartiates
Then the good news, from CBR:
On March 9 th, Warner Bros. Pictures releases in cinemas "300," based on the 1998 Dark Horse Comics graphic novel by Frank Miller. The film is the second in a series of tremendously faithful adaptations of the author's comics work, and depicts in blindingly gorgeous effect Miller's telling of the story of the Battle of Thermopylae. It is crucially important to remember that fact while viewing "300;" that it is not a filmic recreation of the Battle of Thermopylae, but rather, a filmic recreation of Frank Miller's particular vision of the Battle Thermopylae, as it is by virtue of that fact that "300" achieves its most stunning victories as well as its occasionally awkward defeats.
"300" is a film truly worthy of the word "epic," firstly because of its hugely dramatic, (kind of) true story. It's 480 BC, and ancient Greece lies in the path of the Persian Empire, the largest of the ancient world and, as depicted in "300," simply the most awesome and powerful force in the history of all things. A Persian emissary is dispatched to the Greek state of Sparta, where he informs the warrior-king Leonidas (played in the film by Gerard Butler) that Sparta and his rule over her will be maintained if Leonidas allows Sparta to be annexed peacefully by the Persian emperor Xerxes the Great. Iran accuses Hollywood of 'psychological warfare'

Hollywood is already firmly established as a source of cultural decadence in Iran's pantheon of hated western symbols.
But now the country's Islamic leadership has accused it of "psychological warfare" over its depiction of the battle between the Greeks and Persians at Thermopylae in 480BC, regarded as a key event in the birth of western democracy by some historians.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's government has joined MPs, bloggers and local media in denouncing the newly-released Warner Brothers epic, 300, as a calculated attempt to demonise Iran at a time of intensifying US pressure over the country's nuclear programme.
Mr Ahmadinejad's spokesman branded the film "an insult to Iran" while four MPs have urged the foreign ministry to pressure other Muslim countries to ban it.
The film, directed by Zack Snyder and based on a novel by Frank Miller, grossed nearly £40m in ticket sales in three days after opening in north American cinemas last week. It portrays the heroic endeavours of 300 Spartans, under King Leonidas, who are shown resisting an invading force of 120,000 Persian troops led by Emperor Xerxes.
The plot depicts the tiny Spartan force repeatedly outmanoeuvring the invaders and being defeated after a three-day stand-off only through treachery. Iranians complain that it represents them as savage, murderous and warmongering.
The film's availability in Iran has been limited so far to pirate DVDs, but that has not stopped an outpouring of official condemnation.
The government spokesman, Gholamhossein Elham, described the film as "cultural intrusion" and an attack on Iran's ancient civilisation. "Such a fabrication of culture and insult to people is not acceptable by any nation or government," he told reporters. "[Iran] considers it as hostile behaviour which is the result of cultural and psychological warfare."
The reformist newspaper, Ayandehno, accused the makers of trying to set international opinion against Iran to fit President George Bush's description of the country as belonging to an "axis of evil".
"In the film Iranians are considered to be monsters devoid of any culture, humanity and wisdom who know nothing except attacking other lands, threatening peace and killing human beings. There is no option other than to confront, fight and destroy this wicked tribe so that the world can be saved from this axis of evil," the paper's film critic wrote.
It is not the first Hollywood production to cause upset in Iran. There was widespread anger over the favourable portrayal of Alexander the Great in the 2004 film, Alexander. The Macedonian king is reviled in Iranian culture for destroying the seat of Persian imperial greatness at Persepolis after defeating Emperor Darius III in 330BC.

Η Σπάρτη και η Αθήνα ήταν πάντα σύμβολα. Οι Θεσπιές δεν μπόρεσαν να ανυψωθούν στο επίπεδο ενός συμβόλου ώστε κάθε πτυχή της ιστορίας τους να γίνει αντικείμενο λατρείας. Πάντα περίμενα μια αφορμή να αφηγηθώ αυτήν την ιστορία. Η αφορμή μου δόθηκε από την ταινία 300 που παίζεται αυτόν τον καιρό στις κινηματογραφικές αίθουσες.
Στις Θερμοπύλες εκτός από τους 300 του Λεωνίδα έμειναν και αμύνθηκαν οι 700 Θεσπιείς του Δημόφιλου. Αυτοί δεν έχουν τιμηθεί από την ιστορία όπως οι 300 Σπαρτιάτες αν και έμειναν να πεθάνουν μαζί με το Λεωνίδα.
Όταν οι Πέρσες έμαθαν το μονοπάτι και κύκλωσαν τους Έλληνες στις Θερμοπύλες ο Λεωνίδας ζήτησε από όλους τους Έλληνες να φύγουν. Θα έμενε με τους οπλίτες του να κρατήσει το πέρασμα. Για την κίνηση αυτή του Λεωνίδα ο Ηρόδοτος εξηγεί πως είχε δοθεί χρησμός από τους Δελφούς ότι είτε η Σπάρτη θα έχανε ένα βασιλιά της είτε θα κυριευόταν από τους εχθρούς (Ηρόδοτος, Ζ 220). Το επίγραμμα που τίμησε τη μνήμη των Λακεδαιμονίων αναφέρει ότι έπεσαν "τοις κείνων ρήμασι πειθόμενοι", δηλαδή υπακούοντας στους νόμους της πατρίδας.
Τέτοιοι νόμοι δεν δέσμευαν τους Θεσπιείς.
Τους Θεσπιείς δεν τους έστελναν στον πόλεμο λέγοντάς τους "Η ΤΑΝ Η ΕΠΙ ΤΑΣ".
Οι Σπαρτιάτες ήταν υποχρεωμένοι να μείνουν και να πολεμήσουν ως το τέλος.
Οι Θεσπιείς είχαν την επιλογή να φύγουν και να γλιτώσουν το βέβαιο θάνατο αλλά επέλεξαν να μείνουν και να πεθάνουν πολεμώντας.
Ποιοι είναι οι πραγματικοί ήρωες;
Προτιμώ να θεωρώ πραγματικά γενναίους τους Θεσπιείς. Οι Σπαρτιάτες - όπως λέει και το επίγραμμα - υπάκουσαν στο καθήκον.
...και η πόρνη η ιστορία τους έκανε αθάνατους(*).
(*) Η αδικία και η άγνοια που καλύπτει την αυτοθυσία των Θεσπιέων είναι ίσως καλύτερη μεταχείριση: απ' όσο ξέρω κανείς δεν καπηλεύτηκε την γενναιότητά τους και η άγνοια της Ιστορίας δίνει άλλο ένα πρόσθετο δίδαγμα: ότι πρέπει να είμαστε ήρωες για τους εαυτούς μας, για ό,τι αγαπάμε και θέλουμε να προστατεύσουμε.

Ο Λεωνιδας, οι 300 , οι 700 και οι υπολοιποι μπορουσαν καλλιστα να φυγουν η να παραδωθουν. Δεν το εκαναν ομως.
Προτιμησαν να θυσιαστουν για την Ελλαδα. Δεν φοβηθηκαν τον αμετρητο εχθρο.
Οποιο βιβλιο και αν διαβασεις αναφερει τους θεσπιεις.
Ο Λογος ομως που ο Λεωνιδας και οι 300 Σπαρτιατες εμειναν πιο γνωστοι στην Ιστορια ειναι γιατι ο Λεωνιδας ειπε το ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ. Οταν ειπαν οι Περσες στον Λεωνιδα οτι τα βελη μας θα ειναι τοσα πολλα που θα σκεπασουν τον Ηλιο, Ο Λεωνιδας απαντησε 'Ωραια τοτε θα πολεμησουμε υπο σκιαν.
Αν επισκεφτεις τις Θερμοπυλες Θα δεις οτι διπλα απο το μνημειο του Λεωνιδα υπαρχει μνημειο για τους Θεσπιεις.
Φυσικα τιμουμε και θυμομαστε τους θεσπιεις και ειναι λαθος το παραπονο σου.
Ειναι Γενναιοι λοιπον οι Θεσπιεις οσο Γενναιοι και 300 του Λεωνιδα αλλα σκεψου για μια στιγμη τι Θα γινοταν αν ο Λεωνιδας δεν ηταν παλληκαρι η δεν ειχε πει το ΜΟΛΟΝ ΛΑΒΕ
