The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece will convene on February 7 to elect a new Archbishop of Athens and All Greece
One day have remained until the new Archbishop is elected by 75 Metropolitans behind closed doors at the Athens Cathedral.
The four hierarchs who have declared candidacy are Metropolitans Ieronymos of Thebes, Efstathios of Sparta, Anthimos of Thessaloniki, and Ignatios of Dimitriada.
The election will take place in a single undisrupted session of the Holy Synod at Athens' Metropolitan Cathedral, attended by the Education and Religious Affairs minister. A quorum is required, which is designated by the Church's charter and Law 590/77 at two-thirds of the acting Metropolitans, and a maximum of three rounds of voting may be held.
A Holy Liturgy will be held at the Metropolitan Cathedral early Thursday morning, and at 9:00 a.m. the gates of the Cathedral will close in order for the process to commence, first with a prayer, followed by a count to ascertain whether a quorum is present.
The Hierarchs will then cast their votes in a ballot box, in the presence of a three-member monitoring committee which, together with the minister, will seal the ballot box at the end of the voting.
The candidate receiving the absolute majority (50 percent +1) of the votes is elected Archbishop.
In the event that an absolute majority is not amassed by one of the candidates, a second round will be held again requiring an absolute majority.
In the event that no candidate again amasses the required absolute majority, a third round will be held, this time requiring only a simple majority of the votes.
In the case of a tie in the third round, the Archbishop is chosen in a draw.

Thibes and Lebadia Metropolitan Bishop Ieronimos was elected Archbishop of Athens and all Greece in the second voting round, which concluded at noon on Thursday. Mr. Ieronimos gathered 45 votes against 27 votes of Sparti Metropolitan Bishop Efstathios while there were two blank votes. In the first round, the new head of the Greek Church gathered 33 votes- five votes less than those required to be elected- followed by Sparti Metropolitan with 26 votes and Metropolitans of Thessaloniki and Dimitriados Anthimos and Ignatios respectively, who gathered 7 votes each. Electors were 74 as Kilkisiou Metropolitan Apostolos did not attend election procedures. According to the clergy’s statements the election procedures were clear and the best was elected. A presidential decree will be issued in the next days and Mr. Ieronimos will be received by the President of the Republic on Tuesday. His enthronement will take place on Saturday, February, 16.

Η δικαίωση ήρθε δέκα χρόνια μετά
Ο από Θηβών και Λεβαδείας κ. Ιερώνυμος είναι από σήμερα ο νέος Αρχιεπίσκοπος Αθηνών και Πάσης Ελλάδος.
Η Ιεραρχία της Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος τον εξέλεξε πριν από λίγο στο δεύτερο γύρο ως το νέο Προκαθήμενο, τον εικοστό στη σειρά, με 45 ψήφους έναντι 27 του μητροπολίτη Μονεμβασίας και Σπάρτης κ.Ευσταθίου και δύο λευκών.
Στον πρώτο γύρο, ο κ.Ιερώνυμος ανατρέποντας όλα τα προγνωστικά και εκμεταλλευόμενος το διχασμό του στρατοπέδου του Χριστόδουλου προηγήθηκε με 33 ψήφους έναντι 26 του μητροπολίτη Ευστάθιου, 7 του μητροπολίτη Δημητριάδος κ.Ιγνατίου και 7 του μητροπολίτη Θεσσαλονίκης κ.Ανθίμου.
Σε ηλικία 70 ετών και μετά από 27 χρόνια αρχιερατείας στη μητρόπολη Θηβών και Λεβαδείας, ο κ.Ιερώνυμος ανέρχεται στον Αρχιεπισκοπικό θρόνο τον οποίο έχασε υπό ανώμαλες συνθήκες το 1998. Σήμερα η Ιεραρχία της Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος αναγνώρισε το «ηθικό έλλειμμα» και δικαίωσε τον Ιερώνυμο εκλέγοντας τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο.
Ο νέος Προκαθήμενος της Ελλαδικής Εκκλησίας κ. Ιερώνυμος (κατά κόσμο Ιωάννης Λιάπης, γεννήθηκε το 1938 στα Οινόφυτα Βοιωτίας. Σπούδασε θεολογία στην Αθήνα. Χειροτονήθηκε το 1967 Διάκονος και Πρεσβύτερος. Διετέλεσε Πρωτοσύγκελλος της Ι. Μ. Θηβών και Λεβαδείας (1967-1978) και Αρχιγραμματέας της Ιεράς Συνόδου (1978-1981). Εξελέγη και χειροτονήθηκε Μητροπολίτης το 1981.
