LISBON, June 25 (SW) - A goal from Charisteas in the second half shocked title defenders France as Greece advance to the semi finals of the 2004 European Championships.
The first chance of the match came in the fifth minute when a Fyssas cross sailed only just over the head of forward Charisteas. A good chance for the Greeks and France were warned.
A minute later, Karagounis fouled the French playmaker Zinedine Zidane and the Greek right winger was yellow-carded by the Swedish referee Anders Frisk.
Nikolaidis tested the skills of French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez in the 14th minute with a distance shot but the Marseille goalie easily saved.
A minute later, the Greeks almost took the lead when Katsouranis' attempt was first blocked by Barthez but the goalkeeper could not control and eventually had to collect the ball after it had almost gone in via the post.

- Greece coach Otto Rehhagel said his side's 1-0 Euro 2004 quarter-final victory against holders France on Friday will stun the world of football.
Angelos Haristeas headed a 65th minute winner for the tournament outsiders to clinch the most famous result in their history and the biggest ever shock in the European Championship.
"This story will go around the world," said the 65-year-old German who steered Greece into the finals for the first time in 24 years. "I want to congratulate my players for this unbelievable victory which was delivered with passion.
"The French thought at first 'we're the best' and it was only later on that they noticed 'uh-oh'. And then they went to kick and run football and oh what a mess.
"My team kept with the strategy that we had agreed and we won this game. Now we must regroup and are looking forward to the next game with great joy."
Greece, who arrived at the tournament having never won a match at a major championship but stunned hosts Portugal with a 2-1 victory, will play the winners of the Czech Republic and Denmark in the semi-final.
They are the first side to beat the holders and the hosts in the same tournament, underlining the progress Rehhagel has made in transforming Greece's fortunes in the three years he has been in the job.
"The Greeks were always great individualists but they have come to understand that success only comes through the team. It's always all about the team," the German said.
HERO HARISTEAS
Hero Haristeas said there was nothing lucky about their victory, which was achieved with a mixture of superb organisation and no little flair.
"Tonight we really showed what we can do," said Haristeas, who took his tournament tally to two. "They are the best team in the world and we beat them.
"We've shown Greece deserves to be exactly where it is. This had nothing to do with luck. Now we have to calm down and see what the stage brings.
"We've made it here. Now everything is possible."
Defender Takis Fyssas, who helped repel the likes of Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, said: "Thank God I arranged my wedding to be after the final. I feel elated.
"We deserve to be where we are. In the first half we clearly outplayed the French. We deserved to win."
Asked if coach Rehhagel, known in Greece as "King Otto" was "crazy" as the fans have lovingly described him since Greece's dream run began, Fyssas replied: "Of course he is crazy. But we (players) are crazy too because we have big souls."

Incredibile a Lisbona. Nel secondo dei quarti di finale cade un altra grande. I campioni d'Europa uscenti cedono di fronte ad una Grecia che ha strameritato il successo. La rete decisiva porta la firma di Charisteas a metà del secondo tempo.
