After Petros Zervas and Nicos Andreadis completed the destruction of the Nazi fleet in Piraeus, Greece, Nicos shot his best friend and enemy in the chest five times and left him for dead. However, Petros did not die.
Immediately after his recovery, Petros Zervas assumed a name of a dead comrade from the orphanage.
After the liberation he served with honors as an officer in the Greek army and upon his retirement was elected in the Greek parliament three times.
Petros Zervas real identity is known only to his oldest son, George and to the man who wanted him dead, Nicos Andreadis. Why Nicos keep it a secret after all these years? Only he and George know.
How do I know? I am the daughter of Trudi Richter, the Austrian nurse who was in Piraeus then and saved Petros life. Petros Zervas is my father.
This is a note to those who once knew a Petros Zervas. Some will smile and some will curse him for being alive. Because Petros, then 23, used a group of teenagers along with Nico for the deadly operation. I was going to be a slaughter and Petros knew it. But the crippling of the Nazi fleet was responsible for the allied victory in Africa.
Before it is too late, I will go to meet and hug my father. And with me I will bring Nicos Andreadis, the two friends and enemies, back together again.
I know that he will recognize me because I look like my mother and my 23-year-old son is a spiting image of him.Maria Richter-Makris
