GP you are mixing Politics and Olympics something I don't agree with or like, the true meaning of the Olympics is brining people, cultures together no matter what nationality or race you are.
Just because you may disagree with the Iraqi war doesn't mean the U. S athletes shouldn't have the opportunity to win any gold medals after all Bush isn't the one competing and maybe many of those U. S athletes competing in Athens don't agree with Bush's politics. I've seen through the Iraqi athletes what good the U. S has done for them, today an Iraqi boxer won a boxing match you should see how happy he has and how grateful he was toward the United States for giving him the opportunity to compete in Freedom and not having the fear of being punished by one Saddam's sons if he didn't bring the gold medal back home, I heard and watched similar stories from the Iraqi soccer team who are doing so well, I hope the Greek media gets to cover these stories so you can see them too.
When the opening ceremonies took place i was wondering for the standing ovation Iraqi received from the crowd and i was immature to draw some conclusions but after thinking about it i was happy for them because for the first time Iraqi athletes were able to attend the Olympics FREE and that made me proud because the U. S helped them get there and soon enough I ensure you there will be more than 1 or 2 athletes representing Arab countries, Arabs still have a long way to go wasn't sad that Saudi Arabia don't allow any of their females to compete in the Olympics? No Saudi women were allowed to come to Athens. I find that so sad, but for the first time an Afghanistan female athlete was able to compete thanks to the U. S who took down the Talibans
I get what you are saying about poor countries but some of those countries don't view western events like the Olympics positively they view everything as an invasion and evil. In Somalia some of their natives eat white people because they view them as...food and evil and I'm not making this up, It was in the news years ago when some Australian/American female tourists went missing, so no I would never want to see countries as such host any event let alone the Olympics unless they change for the better.
It's getting late so In closing I would leave you with this Athletes no matter what race, nationality work hard to achieve their goals and it's even more special when it happens in your own country.
