The beautiful little Greek girl, Foteini, was the darling of the closing ceremonies. My eyes had remained surprisingly dry up until that time when I saw Foteini staring up at the Olympic flame (Ok, so I did swipe a way a misty tear or two before then). But the moment I saw Foteini take the light and spread it around the stadium like our Easter candle at the Anastasi, my eyes turned into virtual fountains! When she blew out the candle and said “See you next time”, I broke down and cried like a baby.
And I heard the announcer say that she is a little orphan girl who is being looked after at the SOS Villages. Then I felt like a ton of bricks dropped on me. You mean to tell me that there is not one single Greek family who would not want this darling angel to grace their households? Is there not even one!!!?????
Foteini, I will be proud to call you mine, any day!
