The award-winning Romeiko Ensemble, which features cantors and musicians from the U.S., Greece and Turkey, has brought its hauntingly sacred sounds of Constantinople to audiences throughout Europe and the U.S. for over a decade. In the first part of the concert, 16 exceptional cantors will present unpublished Byzantine chants of the Christmas and Epiphany feasts; the cantors (psaltes) will be dressed in reconstructed Byzantine psaltic costumes (skiadion and kamision), a tradition lost during the centuries. In the second half of the program, Romeiko’s vocalists, joined by five of the most prominent instrumentalists from Constantinople on politiki lyra, kanonaki, plagiavlos, tanburas, sazi, and percussion, will present musical excerpts from the Sufi ceremonies as performed in the Mevlevi monasteries (tekke) of Constantinople. Romeiko is led by the musicologist Dr. Yorgos Bilalis, a leading interpreter of Byzantine and Sufi chant who has performed worldwide as a Byzantine psaltes (cantor) and Sufi hafiz (cantor). The program will take place in one of New York's most glorious venues.
Thank you for the event I also listed it in the calendar
