Psarantonis, once called the Jimi Hendrix of the Cretan lyra (3-stringed fiddle), is a unique voice in Cretan music. He hails from the village of Anogia on the northern slope of the Psiloritis, the highest mountain range of Crete. Anogia is renowned for its lyra players and Psarantonis, the youngest of three brothers of the Xylouris family, is its most famous. While he draws on traditional roots, his compositions and vocal renditions are distinctive. His five-member ensemble, which includes two of his sons, performs on lyra, laouto, and percussion. Opening for Psarantonis will be Hainides, a group of young musicians from Crete who perform a wide repertoire of pan-Hellenic music, including Cretan traditional songs. This concert is made possible in part with a grant from the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation.
