AHEPA Family Delegation Concludes Excursion, Celebrates Greek Independence Day in Athens
ATHENS, Greece The 10-person AHEPA family delegation concluded its two-week overseas excursion here today as witnesses to Greek Independence Day celebrations that included observing the national parade. The delegation was afforded the honor of sitting in the review stand as guests of President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias.
It was a thrill and an honor to be in Athens to witness this wonderful celebration Manios said. The display of Hellenic pride was very moving to see and for our delegation to experience
The group wrapped up a week of meetings in Athens yesterday with PASOK Leader and former Foreign Minster George Papandreou. The delegation also paid its respects with a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown.
Earlier this week, the delegation was received by: American Ambassador to Greece Charles Ries, President Papoulias, Deputy Foreign Minister Panayiotis Skandalakis, Speaker of the Parliament Anna Psarouda-Benaki, Minster of Tourism Dimitris Avramopoulos, His Beatitude Archbishop Christodoulos, and were hosted by Mr. Alexander Mitrogogos, special advisor to Mayor Dora Bakoyannis.
Our meetings were fruitful in identifying areas where we can continue to use our resources to benefit Hellenism ; said Manios, who updated Greek government officials on how AHEPA meets its mission in the community on a daily basis through its grassroots network. We appreciate the time afforded to us by the Greek government as well as the assistance of the American Embassy in helping to make our visit a success
In addition, the delegation also met with local AHEPA family chapters in Athens, which hosted the group on March 22.
Grand President of the Daughters of Penelope Demetra Kapolis is accompanying Manios on the excursion.
White House To Issue Proclamation
The supreme president will be in Washington, DC on Monday for the issuance of a proclamation ;Greek Independence Day: A National Day of Celebration of Greek and American Democracy by President George W. Bush.
We thank President Bush for commemorating the importance of Greek Independence Day and for acknowledging the shared democratic heritage and principles of the United States and Greece Manios said. I look forward to being in Washington on Monday
