Greeks of the American Diaspora
Astoria, April 15, 2005. The Greek Cultural Center, in collaboration with the Mayor' Office of Immigrant Affairs, is proud to present a day long event Greeks of the American Diaspora within the context of the Second Annual Immigrant History Week in New York on Sunday, April 17, 2005.
Film Showings (2:30pm-4:00pm) - Free and open to the public
Greeks and Americans 52 min. 2001. Documentary written and directed by Tassos Rigopoulos. Presents the course of Greek Immigration to the US through a variety of interviews, photographs and motion picture clips. It first appeared on Greek National Television (NET) in the series Second Homeland (Defteri Patrida).
Niko's Restaurant 22 min. 2001. Short film written and directed by Efterpi Charalambidis. A Greek restaurant owner struggling to stay afloat, opens his doors in the hopes that his favorite customer will visit. When she finally does he is surprised by her unexpected news.
Rebetika Music and Dance (4:00pm-5:00pm)- Free and open to the public
A unique presentation of Rebetika Music Tis Xenitias including songs first recorded in the United States. Antonis Tsimounis and Sotiris Vangelatos on Bouzouki, Areti Giovanou on piano, accompanied by the Greek Cultural Center's Dance Troupe led by instructor Panagiotis Konstantinidis.
Theater Presentation (6:00pm-8:30pm)- Ticket Price is $15.00
The Theater Group of the Greek Cultural Center presents the play Trees Die Standing Tall by Alejandro Casona, directed by Efterpi Charalambidis. Play presented in Greek. Reservations are required.
