AHEPA Mobilizes To Provide
Financial Assistance to Victims of Hurricane Katrina

WASHINGTON—The supreme president of the American Hellenic Educational
Progressive Association (AHEPA), Gus J. James, II, is urging AHEPA
family
members, chapters, and districts to donate to the AHEPA Emergency Relief
Effort in order to provide immediate assistance to victims of Hurricane
Katrina. All checks should be made payable to AHEPA Charitable Fund,
earmarked “Hurricane Katrina” and forwarded to AHEPA Headquarters at
1909 Q
Street, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20009.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this catastrophic
event
and their families,” James said. “In the Hellenic spirit of
philanthropy,
civic responsibility and good citizenry, I encourage members of our
entire
AHEPA family to make contributions to assist our fellow citizens
affected by
one of the worst natural disasters to hit our country.”

James has appointed Supreme Treasurer Cosmos E. Marandos and Supreme
Governors K. Gus Hazifotis and Anthony Kouzounis as tri-chairs of the
AHEPA
Emergency Relief Effort. They will oversee and coordinate the donation
drive.

Hurricane Katrina pounded the Gulf Coast with devastating force winds
causing extensive damage and destruction to areas of Louisiana and
Mississippi. In Alabama’s Gulf Coast county of Mobile, which was also
heavily battered by the hurricane, the AHEPA family maintains 10 senior
citizen housing complexes and the Penelope House, the first shelter for
battered women and their children in the state.

The mission of the AHEPA family is to promote the ideals of Hellenism,
education, philanthropy, civic responsibility and family and individual
excellence.

The AHEPA family consists of four organizations: AHEPA, Daughters of
Penelope, Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena.

One of the wonderful things that AHEPA is involved in,here in Florida, is purchasing and rebuilding an existing structure and upgrading whatever needs to be modernized, while creating ramps and creating spaces that people with physical disabilities can live in. Or buying large properties and developing housing for senior citizens.

A lot of people regardless of their ancestry who are retired, are living on a fixed icome, and are unable to afford good and safe living spaces (apartments).

What AHEPA does by being the owner of these housing developments, is provide retired people with low income, a place to live where they only pay 1/2 or less of the market price of what the apartments would cost if they were controled by another Real Estate owner (s). These units usually rent for as much as $1,000 per month in another setting, but a person collecting social security can live there by paying as little as $250.00 per month. Depending on the size of the units.

AHEPA recovers the balance through grants from the State that the apartment complex is located, and donations from the public. They are a Not for profit organization, and helping the senior citizens in Florida means growth for the Organization as well.

I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing with their Development / Controler, last year and although I was offered the position to manage the New Port Richie complex, (partly due to my extensive property management experience, the other part being bi lingual Greek)I turned it down due to the complex's proximity to my home. Simply too far away for a daily trip. But they left the door open for the future should I change my mind...

These are the Florida units that AHEPA owns and maintains.

Two others are under development. Daytona and Pensacola.
