Please support the opening weekend of HARD GOODBYES at Village East Cinemas (2nd Ave. and 12th St, Manhattan, 212-529-6799) and help us spread the word! *

"A tender elegy of childhood's end, this is a luminous, funny and deeply moving movie" -- Eleanor Ringel-Gillespie, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"A gifted new Greek filmmaker, Penny Panayotopoulou" -- Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune

A lonely boy, Elias, is preoccupied with thoughts of the upcoming moonlanding. He knows by heart the stories of Jules Verne and makes a pact with his father to watch the landmark event together. Greece, in 1969, is in the midst of the junta, something nine-year-old Elias is still oblivious to. His father Christos, a travelling salesman, is only more than happy to "escape" too. They embark on journeys of the imagination; their blue family car doubles for their spaceship “Birbilo.” Christos’ marriage is troubled, however; his relationship with his teenage son Ari frayed. His job takes him away from home too often. And when the date eagerly awaited by father and son approaches, Elias must rely on their shared love of storytelling and the imagination to transcend the unimaginable.

This film is a tribute to the director’s parents.

About the film: HARD GOODBYES: MY FATHER (DISKOLI APOHERETISMI: O BABAS MOU) was filmed entirely in Greece, both in Athens and at the home of writer/director Penny Panayotopoulou’s parents, not too far from the capital.

She won the Best Directorial Debut prize in Greece. The film won the Greek Film Critics Award, the FIPRESCI prize and the Best Actor Award at the International Thessaloniki Film Festival. HARD GOODBYES had its world premiere at the Locarno International Film Festival, where Giorgos Karayannis (Elias) won the Leopard for Best Actor. The film had its North American premiere in the Discovery Section of the Toronto International Film Festival.

This movie has gone to 40 U.S. cities and will finally get its New York premiere September 16. How well our film does in general also affects how eager U.S. distributors and theatres will be to promote Greek cinema, talent, and the small stories such as this one about a family in 1969 Athens, Greece.

*A portion of the proceeds from the film's New York engagement will go toward the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund on behalf of the affected people in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
