Magna Graecia was the conjoined region of Southern Italy and Sicily colonized by Greeks, and overtaken by Hellenic culture and religion. Its capitol was Sirakon (Syracuse) on Sicily, which at one time was the Mediterranean military hub, and became much more afluent it Hellenism and populated than Athens hersef, and conquered Greece. Magna Graecia remained thoroughly Hellenic through the Roman Empire and was the Latins prime source of Grecianism. Today, Magna Graecia is nationally Italian, and recognized with Greek idenitity and culture.
