Just as another update >> here's the latest news from Aus (pronounced Oz - the land 'down-under'):
Yesterday's local Adelaide Newspaper (The Advertiser) reported how "senior Australian politicians have begun campaigning for the Australian Open sensation Marcos Baghdatis to be exempted from a career-ruining two years in the Cypriot armed forces. It would be a tragedy if the best player in the history of Cyprus was chopped-off to serve two or more years in the army, said Cypriot-born Victorian Energy Minister Theo Theophanos...[who] has already talked this week to the High Commissioner for the Republic of Cyprus..." Victorian Premier Steve Bracks has also added his support by uging "Marcos Baghdatis to migrate to Melbourne...[in the event that] his homeland demanded he join the National Guard."
Whilst it may be argued (by some) that it is unfair for any individual to receive special privileges or to be exempted in certain political matters (such as compulsory conscription) - it is fantastic to witness such recognition and genuine support for a youth's emerging sporting talents by any political leaders in foreign countries. Great talent is truly rare - - - but intervention by local politicians for the advancement and future career prospects of a foreign citizen is indeed extraordinary !!
