Apology to the stolen generation of Australia ...
      Sat Feb 09 2008 05:35 AM

The Australian [Labor] Government has set the date for a formal apology to the members of the Stolen Generation.

The Stolen Generation is a term used to describe indigenous Australians who were removed from their homes from the late 1900's until the 1960's, under government policy aimed at assimilating them into western culture.

The apology will be the first item of business when the new parliament sits on February 13 .

The Indigenous Affairs Minister, Jenny Macklin, says Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will issue the apology on behalf of the Australian Government and will not be attributing guilt to the current generation of Australians .

Ms Macklin says the content of the apology is still subject to widespread consultation, but she says it will form a necessary step to move forward.

A traditional Welcome to Country will be held as part of the Parliament's opening ceremony by members of the Ngunnawal people.

. . . . . . . . . . .

Ironically, the word 'stolen' has hit a raw nerve with the Coalition Government in Australia, who seem more concerned, more preoccupied with "the [potential] consequences of litigation and compensation..." rather than the essence (and the conciliatory intent) of an 'apology' to the stolen, indigenous generation/s of Australia.

For many years now, the Coalition (Liberal) Government has resisted (and consistently refused) to publicly offer any means of a formal apology to the indigenous peoples of Australia for the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families during the early part of the 20th century. Reconciliation Australia is finally making progress ... hopefully the entire nation will begin to move forward (on this issue at least).
