Dubai's Progress & Diversity
(construction boom & state-of-the-art projects/developments)
Miniature islands representing 'The World' (project Dubai)
On Jan 10 2008 the final stone on the breakwater was laid in Dubai, ending phase one of an amazing landmark project that will ultimately represent all the global nations as miniature islands - enclosed within a circular-world-formation. In total, 34 million tonnes of rock were used to construct a 27 km breakwater surrounding the 300 man-made islands that essentially make up a miniature version of The World and its continents. At present, phase two is well underway with major developers constructing the fine/laborious details of a class-A infrastructure - with an expected completion by 2010. The entire development will span approx 9 km by 6 km.
Toward the end of 2007 the official hand over of the miniature world-islands to owners/purchasers began. A construction deadline of approximately 4/5 years for each owner to complete their unique projects was flagged. More than 23 developers who purchased 45% of this Dubai project are currently involved.
The Dubai world-island project (situated four kilometres off the shore of Jumeriah, United Arab Emirates) is envisaged to ultimately consist of approximately 250/300 miniature islands representing all the nations and continents of the world. Each island will include private retreats and estate homes, tourist resorts, and other relevant communal amenities for tourists and residents. It is reported that each island will be separated by fifty to one hundred yards of water, and the estimated cost of each island begins at $US7 million and upwards.

Dubai's crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has set a national goal of attracting 15 million tourists in 2010. Interestingly, that's the same year that Dubai's known oil reserves will most likely be tapped out, according to The Economist. Here's a look at 10 wonders of the quickly changing cityscape. Many promise to be the world's largest, tallest, or first-of-their-kind projects.
Hydropolis - Dubai
10 major 'wonders' in total >>

1) The World - miniature islands representing the nations and continents of the world (as referenced above)
2) Hydropolis - world's first underwater luxury resort, offering hotel rooms with an "ocean-view". Situated 66 feet below the surface of the Persian Gulf, Hydropolis will feature 220 guest suites. Reinforced by concrete and steel, its Plexiglas walls and bubble-shaped dome ceilings offer sights of fish and other sea creatures. Initially scheduled to open in late 2007 but is now estimated for completion by 2009 (following numerous delays). This project was entirely built in Germany and then assembled in Dubai.
3) The Dubai Marina is another man made development that will eventually contain over 200 high-rise buildings when finished. It will be home to some of the tallest residential structures in the world. Most of the first phase projects have been completed, while an number of other tall structures should be completed by 2009-2010. The Marina includes the following:
The Burj Dubai - will be the world's tallest building when it opens in 2009. Construction began in 2005. At an estimated height of over 800 meters, it will easily be world's tallest building when completed. It will be almost 40% taller than the current tallest building, the Yaipei 101. More than 140 stories of the Burj Dubai have already been completed.
&
The Al Burj - will be the centerpiece of the Dubai Waterfront. Once completed it will take over the title of the tallest structure in the world from the Burj Dubai. Recently it was announced that the final height of this tower will be 1200 meters. That would make it more than 30% taller than the Burj Dubai and three times as tall as the Empire State Building.
&
The Burj al-Arab Hotel - the worlds tallest hotel. Considered the only '7 star' hotel and the most luxurious hotel in the world. It stands on an artificial island in the sea.
&
The Burj al Alam or The World Tower . Upon completion it will outrank the al-Arab as the world's tallest hotel. It is expected to be finished by 2009. At 480 meters it will only be 28 meters shorter than theTaipei 101.
4) The Palm Islands - the three artificial islands that make up the Palm are the world's biggest man-made islands; and comprise of: the Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Ali, and the Palm Deira. Each island was built from a staggering 1 billion cubic meters of dredged sand and stone, taken from Dubai's sea bed and configured into individual islands and surrounding breakwaters. The complex will house a variety of tourist attractions, ranging from spas and diving sites to apartments and theaters. The entire complex is designed to collectively resemble a date palm tree when seen from the sky, and is distinctly visible from space. Upon completion, the entire resort will include 2,000 villas, 40 luxury hotels, shopping centers, movie theaters, and many other facilities. It is expected to support a population of approximately 500,000 people.
5) DubaiSports City - a huge collection of sports arenas located within Dubailand. This theme-park-like development known as DubaiSports City will offer visitors a staggering variety of athletic venues, from elegant, gigantic stadiums to state-of-the-art participatory parks for skateboarding, indoor rock climbing, and other activities. Not to mention facilities for polo, car racing, golf, and extreme sports
6) Dubailand - Central Park - anticipated to be twice the size of Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. It is expected to attract approximately 200,000 visitors daily. Dubailand will be built on 3 billion square feet (107 miles^2) at an estimated $20 billion price tag. The site will include a purported 45 mega projects and 200 hundred other smaller projects. The structure is eco-friendly & oriented to reduce solar gain.
7) Eco-Tourism World - offering a variety of nature-themed attractions. These include a petting zoo, gardens, a desert safari, camping facilities, horse-riding center, and biospheres in which various flora and fauna unused to an intense desert climate will thrive in controlled habitats.
8) Dubai Mall - covering more than 5 million square feet, it's the biggest mall in the world. It will house 15 sub-malls, a skating rink, an aquarium, and the planet's biggest gold souk (market).
9) Ski Dubai - Two feet of snow, topped with a daily layer of fresh powder, to be exact -- thanks to the system of 23 blast coolers and snow guns inside Ski Dubai. It might be 135 degrees Fahrenheit outdoors, but inside the 32,290 square-foot, $275 million structure, visitors ski and snowboard. The heavily insulated facility also includes the world's largest indoor snow park, offering 9,842 square feet for sledding or bobsledding.
10) UAE Spaceport - space adventures - estimated price tag of at least $265 million, the world's first spaceport is strategically located to serve both residents and visitors to Dubai. The UAE spaceport actually falls inside the border of a nearby emirate, Ras Al-Khaimah, but it's a quick drive from Dubai, and the developer, America's Space Adventures, is clearly targeting Dubai tourists and residents.
While there's no official opening date or final design set, early renderings indicate that the spaceport will feature a triangular runway/launchpad and domed passenger terminals.

A series of innovative architectural projects and mega-constructions have emerged since the official launch of Dubais 'Street of Dreams' project, back in February 2004. Situated in Emirates Hills at interchange five on Sheikh Zayed Road, Emaar's Street of Dreams consists of nine distinct model homes displaying examples of villas from The Springs, The Meadows and Hattan. Each model home has a different design theme, ranging from modern and post modern to contemporary, luxury and classical. The 'Street' also includes three state-of-the-art libraries, dedicated to architecture, landscaping and interior design respectively.

At present (early 2008), the creators, developers and investors are eagerly maintaining a furious schedule and sharp focus upon the continued "accelerated growth momentum" of Dubai's future.
Further projects include :
The Dubai Metro system, once completed, will become the largest fully automated rail system in the world.
The Dubai World Central International Airport will become the busiest and largest airport in the world when it is completed.

The Have's and the Have Not's - - see, and who said money is 'the root of all evil' - in some cases, money inspires ingenious creativity and motivates highly profitable endeavours to exceptional levels. In Dubai's case it's a win-win situation for all concerned - in which locals (residents and workers alike) can also reap the benefits.
Being wealthy, powerful and comfortable enough seems to allow for the more pleasurable, more creative, more industrious aspects of life.
