To paraphrase excerpts of an old posting by Careless Whisper about the Olympic Games:
We all know that they started at 776 BC as the festival of Zeus, and that wars and conflicts were to cease in order to celebrate the festival [of ethnic, cultural and national unities]. We also know that the Persians took the opportunity to attack Greece during the Olympic Games, not once, but twice, and that the Spartans were called in to defend us and yes, we fought back the Persian empire with only 300 Spartans, etc., etc., etc.
Politics always seems to rear its ugly [head] in the modern Olympic Games as well. We cannot forget Munich and the attack on Israeli athletes. We cannot forget the boycotting of the Moscow and Los Angeles Games. We cannot forget the fact that South Africa only recently was allowed to compete in the Games after being absent due to Apartheid. And not to mention all the biased judging that went on during the Games, marring the men's gymnastic events and casting a shadow over the American gymnast's Hamm's right to the Gold medal.
[Unfortunately, it seems]...we cannot be free of politics [or political intervention of sorts relating to post-modern Olympic Games] no matter how we try ...
[Nevertheless,] May the future [of all Olympic] games be PEACEFUL, DRUG-FREE, and POLITICS-FREE. May this be made reality and not just "idle" idealism .

"For sports, the arts, and other such global competitive gatherings are just the appropriate arenas of pooled international efforts into which the healthy unity and fostering of all nations, cultures and ethnicities can positively progress and improve upon their relations. It is the perfect opportunity for diverse nations of all persuasions and affiliations to come together peacefully, with an added or renewed sense of commitment towards advancing respect, equity and goodwill amongst neighbours and indeed all foreign nations. The Olympic Games (wherever they are held) should remain free of Politics ... now and in the future, for all forthcoming generations to appreciate & to enjoy. The flags and emblems of all nations flying together unitedly at every Olympic Games is a wondrous, serene and humbling sight - for all to see." (AA)
